A trailer brake system is designed to help slow down or stop a trailer when the tow vehicle applies its brakes. It works in coordination with the towing vehicle’s braking system to share the braking force, offering better control and increased safety—especially when hauling heavy loads or driving under difficult conditions.
Types of Trailer Brakes:
Surge Brakes:
These are hydraulic systems that rely on the trailer's forward momentum. When the tow vehicle slows down, the trailer pushes against the hitch, compressing a hydraulic actuator. This pressure activates the trailer brakes.
Electric Brakes:
These brakes are controlled by an electric signal sent from the tow vehicle's brake controller. When braking is detected, the controller sends power to electromagnets in the trailer's brake drums, applying braking force in proportion to the tow vehicle’s deceleration.
Hydraulic Brakes:
These use hydraulic pressure directly from the towing vehicle’s brake system. A hydraulic line connects both systems, so when the driver presses the brake pedal, pressure is transferred to the trailer brakes.
Why Trailer Brakes Matter:
Better Stopping Ability:
Trailer brakes add extra stopping power, which is essential for heavy trailers or tough driving conditions.
Improved Handling:
They help reduce the risk of jackknifing—a dangerous situation where the trailer swings out and affects the tow vehicle’s control.
Greater Safety:
These systems enhance overall safety by allowing the trailer to stop more smoothly and predictably, especially in sudden stops.
Less Strain on Tow Vehicle Brakes:
By helping with braking, trailer brakes reduce the load on the towing vehicle's braking system, minimizing wear and extending its lifespan.
Main Components:
Brake Controller:
Installed in the towing vehicle, this unit detects braking and sends signals to the trailer’s brakes.
Trailer Brake Assemblies:
Located on the trailer’s wheels, these brakes are typically electric or hydraulic in design.
Wiring and Connectors:
These components ensure communication between the brake controller and the trailer’s braking system.
